Manus Agent: A Month-Long Test of What the "All-in-One AI Assistant" Can Actually Do

Manus, the general-purpose AI Agent built by a Chinese team, went from unknown to viral in under two months. Some call it a "virtual employee," others say it "just chats fancy." After 30 days of real use, my conclusion: it can actually do work—but nowhere near as omnipotent as advertised.

What Is Manus?

Manus is a browser-based general-purpose AI Agent. The key difference from ChatGPT:

  • ChatGPT: You ask, it answers
  • Manus: You tell it "do X for me," and it researches, calculates, writes reports, sends emails on its own

It comes with a built-in browser, code executor, and file management system. You describe the outcome you want—it plans and executes.

5 Real Tasks I Gave Manus

1. Industry Analysis Report ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Write a 2026 AI Agent industry analysis report with market share data, key players, and trend forecasts"

Result: 27 minutes to produce a 15-page report. Searched 12 sources, extracted key data, built 3 comparison tables, drew trend charts.

Verdict: Manus's strongest use case. Its information synthesis capability is impressive, but occasionally cites outdated data—human verification on key numbers is a must.

2. Competitive Research ⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Compare Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor on features, pricing, and user reviews"

Result: 11 minutes, output a structured comparison table, scraped GitHub stars, pricing, and Reddit discussions.

Verdict: Impressive speed, but the scraped info lacks depth—it reads "summaries others wrote," not actual product experience.

3. Data Crunching ⭐⭐⭐

"Summarize this CSV sales data by month and region, create a bar chart"

Result: Correctly processed data and visualized, but the chart colors were hideous.

Verdict: Data processing is solid. Design taste is zero. Charts need human beautification.

4. Social Media Copy ⭐⭐

"Write 3 Xiaohongshu posts about AI tools, with emojis and hashtags"

Result: First one was decent. Last two were template-speak—didn't sound like a real person.

Verdict: Creative tasks with aesthetic requirements are still beyond Manus's reach.

5. Flight Booking ⭐

"Find me the cheapest Beijing-Shanghai flight for July 1st"

Result: Searched 4 booking sites, showed me prices, but stopped at "please confirm and click to pay."

Verdict: Manus stopped at the "you decide" step. A true Agent should complete the task end-to-end.

Manus's Capability Map

✅ Excels At 🤔 Can Do, Unstable ❌ Not Ready For
Info gathering & synthesis Creative writing Cross-platform real actions
Data analysis & processing Chart design Transactions involving payments
Structured report generation Multi-turn intent understanding Login/auth-required scenarios
Competitive research Speed optimization Large file handling

Manus is strong at "brain work" (analysis, synthesis, comparison), weak at "hand work" (clicking, paying, uploading).

Manus + Kaihe: Complementary, Not Competitive

People ask: if Manus exists, why buy Kaihe?

Scenario Use
Need public web info Manus ✅
Need internal systems & local files Kaihe Agent ✅
Involves customer/financial data Kaihe (data stays local) ✅
Need 24/7 continuous monitoring Kaihe (not web-dependent) ✅
One-off research task Manus ✅

Core logic: Manus is a "temp worker"—handles one-off tasks. Kaihe's Agent is a "full-time employee"—guards your business 24/7.

Bottom line: Manus is one of the most mature general AI Agents available, strong at information gathering and analysis. But the leap from "AI assistant" to "virtual employee" requires both cloud intelligence AND local execution—Manus provides the first half, Kaihe completes the second.
